Year 1

Year 1 is such a fun year to be in! We learn about a variety of interesting and exciting topics; for example Space, Under the Sea and Safari, to name a few.

The most exciting thing about Year 1 is how much progress we make with three very important life skills; being independent, reading and writing!

Prepared to be wowed! Much of year 1's learning is extended through play and being creative, allowing their imagination and excitement lead their learning.

Our first Discovery theme this year is 'Space'. We will learn all about the planets, aliens, astronauts and rockets. We are also planning an exciting trip to the National Space Centre where the children will come up close and personal with a range of artefacts as well as a real rocket!!

Homework expectation:

In Year 1 we focus on encouraging the children to read every day. The effect daily reading has on ALL areas of their learning is phenomenal.

Reading is rewarded with rainbow stickers, wrist bands and 'Reader of the Week' certificates.

At Lickhill we believe that learning is at its deepest when the children are enjoying themselves and are excited to learn. All the homework set in Year 1 will be based around our current topic and will often be creative or research based, with options for the children to choose from. We find this style of homework allows the children to work closely with adults and siblings at home, which (again) leads to deeper and more enjoyable learning for both child and adult!

Once settled into Year 1 routine the children will receive weekly spellings from their Read Write Inc group.
