Year 5

Welcome to the year 5 class page!

There are many changes that have occurred for the current Year 5 class: a new classroom with smart new furniture; a new teacher (although most have been taught by me before) and a new teaching assistant, Mrs Tunley; a smart looking new uniform and three new members of our class.

Throughout this year, the children will mature in many ways: ensuring their readiness to take on SATs next year.

As a class, we have established our rules and responsibilities to make sure that the classroom is a safe environment in which to succeed. In addition, we have our Seven Secrets of Success to strive towards by being strong, focused, innovative, proud, ambitious and a risk taker. It is essential for each Year 5 child to know that attempting something is a most important factor because ‘those who take risks shall fulfil their passion’.

The expectations for children this year have been discussed with them and are as follows:

5 weekly reads to an adult (to be signed in their home-school diary)

A weekly set of spellings to learn

A Maths and an English homework per week

Extended project tasks will replace English and Maths homework throughout the year. This type of work will be over 3 or so weeks and allow the children some flexibility over how the high quality piece of work will be presented.

We have already had an exciting residential trip to Malvern Outdoor Activity Centre, where the Year 5 and Year 6 students impressed all the adults who accompanied them. We have kicked off this year with a topic of All Things Great and Small and been lucky enough to listen to and ask questions of an Elephant keeper to inspire some of our topic work. Other large topics we’re going to be studying this year are investigating things to do with and around the Earth and its physical features and Save the World being all about the world’s resources and what impact that might have in the future.

I am looking forward to a year of hard work and fun in order that each child in Year 5 will maximise her/his potential.

Water, water!

This week the school were lucky enough to have a visit from Mr Paul Tingle from Severn Trent. He gave a very amusing assembly on the importance of saving water, which the children really enjoyed.
